Weinreich Labs - Heirloom-Quality Digital Instruments

What We Make

The Weinreich Labs Digital Violin is an electronically amplified instrument that remains true to the heart of its acoustic counterpart by capturing the playability and unparalleled sound found only in the world’s finest violins.

What sets this violin’s sound apart is the Bridge Hill System, a proprietary technology for digital signal processing. Violins are known for a rich, full sound accented with delicate nuances and tones, but there is no good way to amplify that complex sound during live performance — at least, not without altering it or creating feedback. But the WL team designed a brand new methodology that measures and recreates the sound of acoustic violins in real-time. This means the Digital Violin captures the complete sound of an acoustic violin, which is wholly unique among electrically amplified violins.

In addition, Weinreich Labs is building a sound library of violin voices, so musicians who play this instrument can also choose its voice: options range from the legendary “Vieuxtemps” to the “Plowden” and other sought-after violins. Listen to samples in the Soundbooth section.

Along with groundbreaking sound quality, the Digital Violin pushes the envelope for aesthetic quality and functionality. Its intuitive design combines exquisite craftsmanship with an elegantly simple interface for effortless, emotive performance. With this instrument, the musician focuses on the music, not the instrument — and the deeper qualities of the musical piece can shine.

Its unique capabilities have opened up a completely new instrument category among electric violins - the Digital Violin. A four-string violin is currently in development, and the WL team plans to eventually expand its repertoire to four- and five-string versions of violin, viola, cello, and bass.

Who We Are

Weinreich Labs is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between acoustician and Professor Emeritus of physics at the University of Michigan Gabriel Weinreich, world-renowned violin maker Joseph Curtin, professional audio and electrical engineer John Bell, and expert industrial designer Alex Sobolev.

Where We’re Headed

Weinreich Labs is a technology company that loves music. In order to begin producing our digital violin and other instruments, Weinreich Labs is seeking support from others who deeply love music and are devoted to preserving the violin’s complete sonic heritage. Soundbooth

To demonstrate the difference the Weinreich Labs Bridge Hill System makes, here is a single performance on the digital violin of an exciting excerpt from Sebelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 - first unprocessed, then with the output digitally processed two different ways.

The first clip lets you experience the raw string signal, a sound output common to most electric violins currently available. The second clip showcases the exact same performance, now digitally processed with our proprietary methodology using the measured voice of the legendary “Vieuxtemps” Guarneri ‘del Gesu’ of 1741. The third clip digitally processes the output to produce the sound of a new instrument by Joseph Curtin. The final clip is a short back-to-back comparison of the three previous voices.
